Have you considered the very high likelihood that those opposing 26 Jan will just shift their protests to whatever day is chosen? This movement is not driven by good-faith concern for Aboriginal people's welfare but by culture war objectives.
Hi Fredro, thank you for commenting. I have many First Nations friends and I actively plug into First Nations literature, news, projects, academia etc. There are some who will still find it difficult to celebrate Australia Day on any date and I empathise with their reasons for this. They should be given the space and freedom to express their views, with the rest of Australia offering empathy and understanding. However, the vast majority of First Nations people, organisations and supporters would be very happy, an in fact are pining to celebrate Australia Day with us non-First Nations, just on a day that didn't specifically commemorate the British invasion of their country and culture.... changing to the date to no date, to the last Friday in January might be a wonderful way to include everyone, with respect, dignity and joy.
Well said
Thanks Cate
